Japan in Government criticizes current standards for economic statistics

The first meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party’s project team to develop new economic statistics was held on Thursday. “The figures for GDP do not match our daily sense,” said team chairman Yoshimasa Hayashi, a lawmaker in the House of Councilors.
Nearly four years have passed since the launch of the Abenomics ecnomic policy package, but the GDP growth rate remains low. Quarter on quarter, the real GDP rose 0.2 percent in April-June. GDP is one of the most widely used measures to define a nation’s economic scale and trends, and has a powerful influence on economic policy.
The GDP has also been criticized by a member of the government. Administrative Reform Minister Kozo Yamamoto expressed his intention to review the statistics, saying, “We don’t know to what extent we can trust the GDP.”
Yamamoto sees himself as a “founding father” of Abenomics, as he called for significant monetary easing by the Bank of Japan from early on.
When the GDP growth rate moves in the region around zero, slight moves to positive or minus change people’s impression of the economy. Nihon University Prof. Yasuyuki Komaki, who specializes in macroeconomics said, “Awareness of the need to increase the precision of statistics is growing more than ever before.”
Limits to statistics

Penemu Baterai ? Ini Sejarahnya

Penemuan ini berawal ketika sebuah silinder tembaga diletakkan di tengah-tengah batang besi dalam larutan yang tidak diketahui. Larutan ini belakangan disebut elektrolit dan peristiwanya dikenal sebagai ionisasi larutan elektrolit (Monk, 2004) di baghdad-irak

di Baghdad merupakan salah satu artifak kuno yang paling membingungkan para ilmuwan maupun arkeolog. Pada tahun 1930 silam, pada sebidang makam kuno di luar Baghdad (Khujut Rabula), beberapa arkeolog yang melakukan penggalian di sana menemukan sebuah artifak yang diduga merupakan satu set baterai kimia yang usianya telah mencapai 2000 tahun lebih (Jenstea, 2010).

Penemu Baterai :
Alessandro Volta, seorang fisikawan Italia, adalah orang pertama yang menemukan baterai pada tahun 1800. Volta juga membuat penemuan penting lain dalam bidang pneumatik, serta meteorologi dan elektrostatika. Alessandro Volta lahir di Como, Italia, dan pada usia 29 tahun menjadi profesor fisika di Royal School di kota kelahirannya.

Pada tahun 1774, Volta menemukan electrophorus atau sebuah perangkat yang bisa menghasilkan listrik statis. Setelah 5 tahun di Royal School, Alessandro Volta dipanggil untuk menjadi profesor di University of Pavia pada tahun 1779. Di tempat tersebut, dia menemukan “tumpukan volta”, metode praktis pertama untuk memproduksi listrik.

Tumpukan volta dibuat dengan menumpuk piringan tembaga dan cakram seng secara berselingan dengan potongan karton yang dicelupkan dalam air garam ditempatkan di antara kedua piringan tersebut. Tumpukan tersebut mampu menghasilkan arus listrik. Penemuan ini diakui sebagai baterai pertama yang menghasilkan arus listrik secara konsisten dan dapat diandalkan.

Luigi Galvani, yang hidup sezaman dengan Alessandro Volta, sebelumnya mengajukan teori galvanik yang menyatakan bahwa jaringan hewan memiliki beberapa bentuk listrik di dalamnya. Sebagai bentuk sangkalan terhadap teori Galvani, Alessandro Volta menunjukkan bahwa listrik dihasilkan ketika logam yang berbeda seperti kuningan dan besi kontak satu sama lain dalam suasana lembab, dan tidak melalui jaringan hewan.
 
Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) merupakan pengembangan dari Li-Ion, yang mulai digunakan untuk perangkat elektronik sejak tahun 1996. Biaya pembuatan Li-Po lebih murah dibandingkan Li-Ion, dan lebih tahan terhadap kerusakan fisik. Kapasitas penyimpanan energi Li-Po 20% lebih tinggi dibanding Li-Ion, 300% lebih tinggi dibandingkan daya simpan NiCad dan NiMH. Tetapi karena produksinya belum sebanyak baterai Li-Ion, harga jual dari baterai yang satu ini masih lebih mahal (Bataviase, 2010).
 
Baterai Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad) yang merupakan baterai yang dibuat dari campuran Nikel dan Cadmium, diproduksi pertama kali setelah penemuan artifak batu baterai di Baghdad yang membuat perhatian dunia tertuju ke arah penelitian tentang pembuatan dan pengembangan baterai yakni pada tahun 1946. Namun memiliki kekurangan yakni ada pada biaya pembuatan yang mahal, kapasitas berkurang jika baterai tidak dikosongkan (memory effect), dan tidak ramah lingkungan (beracun). Kemudian pada tahun 1980, baterai Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) dikembangkan dengan kapasitas lebih besar dan tidak menggunakan senyawa kimia yang berbahaya bagi lingkungan. Namun, seiring dengan perkembangan teknologi, baterai ini dianggap kurang mampu menangani perangkat eletronik yang baru. Pada perkembangan selanjutnya adalah baterai Lithium-Ion yang ditemukan pertama kali tahun 1960 di Bell Labs. Baterai ini paling banyak digunakan untuk perangkat elektronik karena rasio energi dan berat paling baik, tanpa memory effect (bisa diisi ulang kapan saja), bentuk sangat fleksibel, ringan, dan kehilangan daya saat digunakan paling kecil. Namun sayangnya, kekurangan dari baterai ini adalah umur pakainya tergantung dari lama pembuatan dan seringnya frekuensi isi ulang. Maka dari itu, muncullah baterai Lithium-Polymer (Bataviase, 2010).
